Research & Discovery
QUESTION
How can home decor help young adults express themselves affordably and without long-term commitment?
Through secondary research, I explored how interior design affects mood, identity, and spatial perception, especially in small or temporary living spaces. I examined expressive and sustainable brands and studied design approaches that emphasize adaptability, sensory experience, and inclusivity. Lighting, texture, and personalization emerged as powerful tools for transforming a space into something that feels like home.
To better understand real user needs, I conducted two surveys with over 150 young adults living in apartments, dorms, or shared housing. The results revealed a strong desire for personalization paired with limited access to flexible and affordable solutions. While collecting visual inspiration, I discovered a vintage 1970s Paul Secon Sompex Plastic String Art Swag Lamp. Its geometric form and colorful string details inspired the foundational aesthetic of what would become Loomy.
